Sotheby's wins plaudits (and pounds) with its German art collection sale.

By Melanie Gerlis | The Art Newspaper Web only
Published online 29 Jun 11 (Market)
Sotheby's made £108.8m in tonight's sale, the highest ever total
for a contemporary art auction in London

Sotheby's made £108.8m in last night's sale, the highest ever total for a contemporary art auction in London and more than twice the £45.6m made at the equivalent sale last year, thanks to a much-anticipated, focused collection of German post-war works.

The 34 works from the collection of the German industrialist Count Christian Duerckheim were deep in artists who had moved from East Germany to West Germany just before the 1961 construction of the Berlin Wall—in particular Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz and Sigmar Polke. Many of the works up for sale had not been seen since for at least 40 years.

The collection opened the auction and bidding was fervent right from the start. In the saleroom, dealers from Europe and the US—including Christophe Van de Weghe, Thaddaeus Ropac, Alexander Acquavella, Larry Gagosian and Paolo Vedovi—all bid on the works, while the telephones (most usually connected to private buyers) were also busy. Works flew past their estimates, particularly those at the beginning of the sale. Polke's Kopf (Head), 1966, went for £3.7m (est £800,000-£1.2m) over the phone; Baselitz's Der Baum (The Tree), 1966, for £1.8m (est £600,000-£800,000) and Richter's 1024 Farben (1024 Colours), 1974, estimated to make between £1m and £1.5m, sold to van de Weghe on behalf of “a friend” for £4.3m. “It's an incredible collection and the work is amazingly fresh,” he said, explaining why he kept bidding up to such a high level.

How far people were prepared to go for a piece of the collection was demonstrated in the bidding for Richter's Schwestern (Sisters), 1967 (est £1.2m-£1.8m). Immediately after auctioneer Tobias Meyer began at £750,000, there was a call from the packed saleroom to place the next bid at “£1.9m”. The work finally sold for £2.5m to the German collector Jürgen Hall, who announced after the auction that he was gifting it to the Kunstmuseum in Bonn.

Ropac bid on nearly ten of the Duerckheim works, mostly by Baselitz, getting outbid each time apart on Muh Kühe, 1966, which he bought for £937,250 (est £600,000-£800,000). “The sale was extraordinary,” he said, “I bid on every Baselitz, so to get just one was a bit frustrating!”
In this section alone—which made a total £60.4m against a pre-sale estimate of £31.8m-£46m—five artists records were set: for Polke, Baselitz, Eugen Schönebeck, Markus Lüpertz and Blinky Palermo.

Duerckheim’s collection came to the auction house through its European head of contemporary art, Cheyenne Westphal, who confirmed that the unassuming collector had not come to London to follow the minutiae of the auction. “We will telephone him tomorrow,” she said.

The remaining, various owner, 54 lots could never keep the same pace (in total £48.4m, est £42.2m-£59.4m), but some of the atmosphere spilled over. “The energy and excitement [from the Duerckheim lots] rolled into the rest of the auction,” said van de Weghe.

Sotheby's also benefited from following last night's auction at Christie's and was able to tweak its consignors' reserve levels on some of the artists whose works had disappointed. Chris Ofili's Untitled, 1994-1995 sold for £421,250 (est £400,000-£600,000) and Glenn Brown's Secondary Modern, 1998, went for £601,250 (est £500,000-£700,000): both artists had two works unsold each last night.

“Obviously there were conversations [with consignors] today,” said Sotheby's deputy chairman, Oliver Barker, adding that Sotheby's had also been more “judicious” with its estimates. While the auction house couldn't match Christie's work by Francis Bacon, either in quality or price achieved, its Bacon offering, Crouching Nude, 1961, went for a respectable £8.3m (est £7m-£9m).

Overall, the European works maintained their momentum, while some American pieces flopped—Jeff Koons basketball piece (executed between 1983 and 1998, est £600,000-£1m), Roy Lichtenstein's Eccentric Scientist, 1964 (est £600,000-£800,000) and Andy Warhol's distinctive Campbell's Soup Can (Tomato), 1962, were included in the unsold tally (nine out of 88 works in total were bought in). Warhol's late work, Debbie Harry, 1980, had been much touted by the auction house, but attracted only one bid over the telephone before selling for £3.7m (est £3.5m-£5.5m).

Sotheby's sale brought the week's total amount raised at the three contemporary art evening sales to £200m, more than twice the amount that was made at the equivalent sessions last year (£90.7m).

Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction 29 June

The Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 29 June in London will present a selection of works of major significance, including 34 lots from The Duerckheim Collection, the most important private collection of post-war German Art ever to be offered for public sale. The Duerckheim Collection includes early and formative masterpieces by Georg Baselitz, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo and several others, which document their exhilarating advancements of the 1960s. The appearance of paintings of this quality, art historical significance and freshness to market is exceptionally rare and represents a very special auction moment.

Lots 35 to 88 include paintings and sculptures of the highest order, led by Francis Bacon's stunning Crouching Nude of 1961, Jean-Michel Basquiat's heroic Untitled of 1981, and two paintings by Andy Warhol: the truly iconic 1962 Campbell's Soup Can (Tomato) and his spellbinding Debbie Harry of 1980. Portraits of women confidantes of two titans of Contemporary Art, the definitive emblem of Pop Art, and a monumental exclamation of Basquiat's inimitable aesthetic; these masterpieces respectively summate the remarkable careers and innovation of their authors. While Property from the Collection of Dave Stewart incorporates two stunning early spot paintings by Damien Hirst, further major works by Basquiat, Christopher Wool and Jeff Koons spearhead a superlative congregation that Sotheby's is proud to present for auction.

China artist Ai Weiwei released on bail

Ai Weiwei, right, shakes hands with foreign journalists gathered
outside his home in Beijing, China, 22 June, 2011

Ai Weiwei said he was in good health, but could not talk to the media about his case

Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has returned home having been freed after more than two months' detention.

He was bailed late on Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges of tax evasion, Xinhua news agency said.

An outspoken critic of China's human rights record, his arrest in April prompted a global campaign for his release. The 54-year-old said he was back home and in good health in a phone interview with the BBC. "I am already home, released on bail, I can't talk to media but I am well, thanks for all the media attention," he said.

Mr Ai was detained as he boarded a Beijing flight bound for Hong Kong.

Perhaps most famous for helping design the Bird's Nest stadium that became the centre-piece for Beijing's 2008 Olympics, he was held at a secret location without access to a lawyer.
Beijing alleged the artist had evaded taxes and destroyed evidence; his supporters said the charges were motivated by his activism.

'I'm out'

Xinhua reported that Mr Ai - who, it said, was suffering from a "chronic illness" - had offered to repay the taxes and would be released because of "his good attitude in confessing his crimes".

Police said the Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd, the company that handles the business aspects of Mr Ai's career, had evaded "a huge amount of taxes and intentionally destroyed accounting documents", said Xinhua.

STUDIO VOLTAIRE, LONDON - EDUCATION CURATOR OPPORTUNITY

Education Curator

£23,000 pro rata, 2/3 days per week
24 month contract, potentially renewable, 3 months probationary period

Application Deadline:  Wednesday 29 June 2011
Interview Date: Monday 4 July 2011

Over the past year, Studio Voltaire has been reassessing how there Education Programme relates to the organisation as a whole in terms of artistic content, organisational strategy and sustainability.  Over the last ten years there has been a much more substantial focus on the role of education in art galleries. More recently, this has shifted into a focus on integrated programmes that break down the division between curatorial and education work. This is reflected in curatorial models and artistic practice more widely that have brought collaboration, research and participation into the gallery environment.  They have developed a new programme that signals a marked change in our artistic strategy with closer links with our Exhibition and Studio Programmes through the dovetailing/overlapping of these activities and providing new ways and contexts for working with artists/art work. The programme will have multiple entry points for audiences and participants through a diversity of programming and activities, and be a key part of our audience development plans.

The new programme takes the work of the late Jo Spence as a starting point for investigating the legacy of her work in relation to contemporary culture and life through a series of exhibitions, commissions, offsite projects, workshops and public events - both in community framework and a more mainstream contemporary art discourse.  Jo Spence (1934 –1992) was a key figure on the English photographic scene from the mid seventies and crucial in debates on photography and the critique of representation. Her work engaged with a range of photographic genres, from documentary to Phototherapy. Through her own artistic practice and teaching, which are very closely linked, she rigorously explored complex issues of class, gender, health and the body, combining personal experience, political understanding and critical theory. The work produced near the end of her life dealt directly with her experience of having cancer and the treatment she received by the medical establishment.
The Education Curator will play a key role in developing and managing the new programme within a community and participatory context.  Working with Studio Voltaire’s Artistic Director and Education Committee, the programme will particularly strive to reach out to and involve a range of locally based interest groups including women’s groups, schools, colleges and local health and wellbeing centres.

This position has been made possible with the generous support of Bloomberg.

PICASSO PAINTING SELLS FOR ALMOST £13.5m

Picasso painting sold for almost £13.5m at Christie's

Jeune Fille Endormie (1935). Picture courtesy of Christie's
The painting has only been seen in public once before
A rarely seen painting by Pablo Picasso has been sold for almost £13.5m at Christie's auction house in London, exceeding expectations.

Jeune Fille Endormie (1935), a portrait of the Spanish artist's lover, had been estimated to sell for £9m-12m.

The artwork was donated to the University of Sydney, provided the establishment used money from the sale for scientific research.

Giovanna Bertazzoni from Christie's said the piece was an "absolute jewel".

Marie-Therese Walter was the subject of many of Picasso's celebrated works. The couple met in 1927 when he was 45 and she was 17. The couple spent time together at Picasso's country home, the Chateau de Boisgeloup, where he created a string of masterpieces. Nude, Green Leaves And Bust, another portrait of Walter sold last year for a record $106.5m (£65.5m).

Dr Michael Spence from the university said it was a "very generous and far-sighted gift" that was donated to them by an anonymous person.

"We are grateful for their extraordinary generosity and delighted with the outcome of the auction."
He said the money would go towards research into obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

DEIVIS SLAVINSKAS SOLO EXHIBITION 21 JUNE - 15 JULY

Deivis Slavinskas's Solo Show - Textures of the Collective Unconscious
21 June - 15 July 2011

The Gallery at Willesden Green, 95 High Road, London NW10 2SF
www.Slavinskas.com

Maria Robertson reviews Deivis Slavinskas's solo exhibition:

The solo exhibition 'Textures of the Collective Unconscious' by Deivis Slavinskas is not a passive experience. It is a call to explore, to revel and respond with dreams and imaginings. Each painting has a unique quality and message; together these paintings are a series of dreams set out on canvas. Physical layers of paint, correspond with psychological and metaphysical layers of meaning, to engage the viewer in a visceral and thought provoking interaction.

On one level, you can enjoy these paintings as a pure visual feast, in the here and now, an exciting cascade of colour and form. The use of sculptural techniques, heavy textures and layering create an impressive sense of vitality and energy, giving the paintings a real and active presence. In some paintings the subject material enthusiastically spills over from the canvas onto the surrounding frame. Each painting is a raft of colour, contrasts and textures, scores and scrapes, sweeps and curves in carefully crafted composition. Deivis's assiduous attention to detail draws the viewer further in to the experience, underscoring the passion and intent behind the art.

A further layer reveals a spiritual realm to Deivis's art, something mystical and arcane, glimpses of a deeper universal theme. Totems and glyphs are woven into the fabric of the art. An animal, words, the flow of water, an overseeing eye, the monster, the river, the depth, the crown. These reassuringly primal images provoke feelings of innate recognition, motifs of a shared understanding and belief system, a 'collective knowing'.

These paintings communicate both the personal and the profound, inviting the viewer to explore relatedness to the 'self' and in a broader sense 'connection to others'. A remarkable, creative achievement, provoking a uniquely human response and taking the viewer on a compelling visual, psychological and spiritual journey.

Creative Coast Private View this Friday 3rd June - Away by Terence Kershaw

PV  Friday 3rd June - Away by Terence Kershaw

CC's first exhibition 'Away' by Terence Kershaw is in situ at Stade Hall, and the PV will be this Friday (3rd June) at 6-8pm, with a performance by Yumino Seki in response to the piece.

'Away' has been specially commissioned and constructed for this opening exhibition at PROJECT.

Terence Kershaw is a young sculptor whose work explores the territory between man and machine. He creates mechanical forms that behave in an uncanny fashion, drawing parallels with the human condition. He graduated from Kingston University in 2007 with a first class degree for his practice. He is currently developing his own sculptural direction through both kinetic and static constructions, and working as assistant to the sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. Past prominent local work includes a bold sculpture in the gated arts space by St Leonards Warrior Square station in 2009, a large-scale commission on the promenade for Eastbourne Festival 2009, and a mechanical structure at House of Hastings on Queens Road in 2010.

Yumino Seki has developed a performance working with Kershaw's sculpture in the Stade Hall. She explores and reflects the inner landscape where the boundary between physicality and the mind is challenged. Most of her work is site specific. Space, site and environment are also key elements which put the body in context. Each space offers a unique exchange. Seki has worked with many renowned choreographers including Tadashi Endo, The Gary Rowe Dance Company and Angela Woodhouse. She is currently a member of the French based company, Ariadone

All welcome.

MELTDOWNS RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Art Residency

Residency Programme

2011 Residency: 25th July to 28th August
Application Deadline 1st of July

The Residency Programme aims to encourage research & development activity in a supportive & inspiring environment. As artists ourselves, we recognise the importance of artists’ research & development without the pressures of an exhibition or final product. We therefore aim to create a space in which an artist can develop their ideas whilst not being restricted by studio space, technical issues or time. Please note the time spent on the residency is purely for research & studio development. The studio provided is a private space & no community interaction or teaching commitment is required.

The residency is during a period of five weeks in the summer, usually over July & August. The minimum number of days required attendance is three days a week, allowing for a part-time job during the residential period; however we would favour full time commitment.
The intention is for the selected artist to undertake a period of research or studio related activity during their placement & the expected outcome will be the generation of a body of work or research by that artist.

The Facilities & Finance
The artist is given full use of our project space. A series of contact meetings with members of staff at Meltdowns will be provided to discuss progress, any technical issues experienced or to receive an informal tutorial or crit as deemed most appropriate at the time.

There is a bursary provided (yet to be determined for 2011).  This is expected to cover all costs including materials, sustenance & accommodation. The selected artist will receive 50% of the bursary on acceptance on the placement & 50% on completion of the placement. The bursary will be paid directly into the artist’s bank account.
The resident artist will have access to the wireless network within the project space, the workshop & materials can be bought from us if required.

Eligibility
Applicants will be expected to have a degree (either undergraduate or post graduate) within a creative subject in any discipline, or be able to clearly demonstrate through portfolio development equivalent experience. Applicants must detail how they would benefit from this opportunity & what they aim to develop within their practice during the residency period. The residency is open to artists based in the UK.

Application and Selection Process
When submitting an application, artists will need to complete the Application Form, The Equal Opportunities Form (this isn’t compulsory) & to include their proposal. The proposal should include an artists’ statement (500 words), a research proposal (500 words), 10 current research questions that may or may not change through the residency placement & a paragraph demonstrating how this residency will help their practice. We also ask that they include a recent CV/Biography & five images of their work.

As part of our strive towards an ecologically considered studio practice, we would prefer applications via email. One can email applications to info@meltdowns.co.uk. It is preferred that images are JPEGS. Please do not send any videos.
All applications will be considered on their own merit & five artists will be short-listed. Interviews will take place during June when short-listed artists will present their work to the selection panel before a final decision is made. The successful artist will be notified in writing during June.
The decision made by the selection panel is final & unfortunately we will not be able to enter into any correspondence with unsuccessful applicants, as we cannot afford to spend time doing so.

I REALLY WANT A SET OF THESE!

Kai and Sunny boxed print editions The Flower Show

Posted by Gavin Lucas, 1 June 2011 for Creative Review

Kai and Sunny's latest exhibition, The Flower Show, is set to open later this week at East London's StolenSpace gallery. The duo has given CR a sneaky look at the A3 limited edition box set that will be released as part of the show, containing five letterpressed images – all of which take inspiration from flowers – from the exhibition.

The set also includes a short story entitled The Gardener, written exclusively for the project by author David Mitchell (the duo's cover for Mitchell's 2004 novel, Cloud Atlas, appears in the June issue's Monograph).

Inside the box the there are six A3 letterpressed prints, five of which are images from Kai and Sunny's exhibition, and one of which is the short story by Mitchell. All are signed and numbered in an edition of 50, one-colour, Heavy Impression on 300gsm Somerset Velvet stock. The prints are wrapped in translucent tissue paper and sealed with a blob of wax, as above.

"We loved the idea of marrying literature with our images," says Kai Clements of the story included in the box set. "Sunny and I are both huge fans of David Mitchell's work and because of our history with him, having designed covers for his books, we felt it was right to approach him for this project. We sent over our images and asked if he'd be interested in writing a short story exclusively for us based on the images. We were so pleased he agreed and even more happy when we read the story - it sits with the images perfectly."

The A3 limited edition box sets will cost £200 + VAT. Full details will be posted soon at kaiandsunny.com

The Flower Show will run from June 3 - 26 at StolenSpace gallery, Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL. Opening times and more details at stolenspace.com
